District Two Championships! - June, Syracuse, NY

Quality, quality, quality!  Many exhibitors and spectators at the National Show Horse District Two Championships at Syracuse International considered this competition to be the best in years.  Indeed, quite a few national champions were in attendance, but some newcomers and on the money seasoned campaigners did not let them snatch all the tri colors. No doubt we will see some glorious competition at Finals in September.

Two of the biggest NSH training stables in the country, Wallen Central of Kentucky and Berger Training Centre of Ohio, brought impressive animals that took home a large number of firsts and championships.  Otherwise, many of the other horses came from one and two horse amateur show stables that did not let the big guys take home all the cash and trophies, although all the halter classes were won by beautiful entries from Burgers’.  In fact, all of the halter reserves went to that barn also, except for one that was grabbed by Wallen Central.   The performance entries from Wallen’s and Bergers’ grabbed a number of the big wins, too, but not all of them.Full results will be on the Registry’s web site, www.nshregistry.org.

Our New England and NSH-NE owned horses picked up numerous top five awards, some reserve championships and two district championships.  In the Fillies and Mares District Championship, Gail Shane’s Airborn was among the top five as was KV Mistress Cholette, who just became Alicia Mala’s first NSH.  The Gelding D.C. also had two New Englanders in the top five, Chris Picardi’s SFA Night Flight and Holly Turner’s Gettin Jiggy With It.  Night Flight repeated his win in the Amateur Geldings.  MF Barry White owned by Matt Gonyaw and Yippee Ki Yay owned by Gail Shane were both top five in Stallions.

Carol Quigley and her After Midnight won both the Classic Country AOTR and the district championship for that class.

Country Pleasure classes were the largest of the NSH division.  In the Junior/Novice D.C., Kathy Busier’s Golden Arches was reserve champion followed by SFA Night Flight.  The 18 and Over saw Golden Arches second, SFA Night Flight third, Pat DeLong’s Nightro fourth, Barry Blocher’s Europa fifth and Kylee Huizenga’s Basic Instinct sixth.  The 17 and Under second place winner was Sydney Bohren’s Uther Pendragon.  Golden Arches and Europa both were top five in both the Open and Amateur D.Cs.

The English Pleasure Amateur 18 and Over was won by Mike Frye’s Wayward Night~ with Suzanne Mader’s Commanders First Edition second. The 17 and Under was won by Sydney Bohren’s Once Upona Time.  Commander’s First Edition also got a top five in the Junior/Novice D.C.  Wayward Night~ won the Amateur D.C., the fifth such win of his career, with even more counting Open.  Once Upona Time got a top five and showed back in the Open to do the same.

The Junior/Novice Pleasure Driving D.C. reserve championship went to Holly Turner’s Stirrin The Pot who was also top five in the Open D.C. along with Yippee Ki Yay.  The Three-Gaited Open D.C. gave Gettin  Jiggy With It a top five. The Fine Harness Open District Championship awarded Yippee Ki Yay a top five.  The NSH UPHA Challenge Cup was won by Sydney Bohren.

Hunter Pleasure Amateur was won by Barry Blocher’s Americana who was reserve champion in the Open D.C. and top five in the Amateur D.C., as well.

The four day show, which was filled with parties and special events, left exhibitors in a state of happy exhaustion and eager for the 2004 edition. Congratulations to all our successful riders and horses and many thanks to our host, the American Saddlebred Horse Association of New York.

A Great Time at Octoberfest

Octoberfest Horse Show at the Big E enjoys a large turnout of NSH exhibitors, even some for whom there are no breed classes.  The NSH Country classes were the largest in New England this year with 10 in the qualifying and 9 in the championship.

Alicia Mala’s filly KV Mistress Cholette won the NSH halter class followed by Matt Gonyaw’s MF Got Two B Me and his MF Barry White, Dawn Crandall’s Wall Street Wally and Kylee Huizenga’s Basic Instinct.

The Country qualifier was won by Pat DeLong’s Nightro, followed by Kathy Busier’s Golden Arches, Barry Blocher’s Europa, Meagan Fleishman’s M.A. I’m Your Huckleberry, Kylee Huizenga’s Basic Instinct and Kelsey Fiore’s JR’s Ring My Bell.  All of the above plus three others showed back in the championship which saw the first tri-color going to M.A. I’m Your Huckleberry who made his debut under his new ownership at this show.  Wall Street Wally was reserve champion, Golden Arches was third, Europa fourth, KV Mistress Cholette, who made her under saddle debut at this show with her young owner in the irons, fifth and Basic Instinct sixth.

The NSH Driving was won by Holly Turner’s Stirrin The Pot.  Both the English Pleasure and the English Pleasure Championship were won by Sydney Bohren’s Once Upona Time.  Stirrin The Pot, shown in his first saddle class by Jerome Parker who also drove him, was second in the English qualifier.

In addition to those placing in their NSH classes, several NSHs did well in the open classes.  Once Upona Time placed fourth and fifth respectively in the Open English and Open English Championship.  Megan Herrmann’s The Cat’s Meow was fourth in both the 16 horse Junior Exhibitor Hack and the 19 horse J.E. Hack Championship.  Sara Moseley’s Hot Purrsuit was second in the NEHC English Pleasure and fifth in the Ladies’ Pleasure.  Meagan Fleishman won two fourths in the Junior Exhibitor pleasure classes with her M.A. I’m Your Huckleberry.

Not only were there winning NSHs, there were some winning NSH people at the show, namely entrants in the Halloween costume contest.  The entry of Firewind Farm, including Marjorie Steele, Kylee Huizenga, Ginny Frye, costume creator Kathy Busier and Kylee’s parents Bonnie and Butch, pictured left to right as named, won second place in the group category with their chicken, farmer and farmer’s wife outfits.   A couple of the chickens were almost frightened out of their feathers when looking up Marilyn Monroe’s (Matt Gonyaw) dress. Firewind South was second in the individual category, with Ginny’s nephew Matthew Mullen dressed as Gandolph.  The outstanding crow outfit was designed and worn by Ginny’s niece Carol Panagopolous.
