WINNERS!
NSH-NE’s GOT ’EM

Members of the National Show Horse Association of New England may have set a record this year for number of national championships won at Finals by our people and their horses! Representing the Northeast were Judy Motley’s Mighty Aphrodite, Pat DeLong’s Chantilly Lace, Chanelle and Nightro, Gail Shane’s Yippee Ki Yay, Susan Walker’s Classique Memories, Rachel Crystal’s Clear The Way and two equitation riders, Rachel Crystal and Ashley Hamilton. What a pile of money, ribbons, trophies, floral blankets and garlands they brought home along with many memories!

Ashley Hamilton, a new member from Florida who now is in Massachusetts as a freshman at Boston College, fulfilled a long-time dream, a dream that many hardworking and talented teens have but few achieve. Ashley loves saddle seat equitation. She has had only a few chances to actually compete at the national level. Excitedly looking forward to Finals, she was devastated to learn that her horse, Some Like It Hot, had cut his mouth before it was time to leave for the show. Healing did not progress fast enough in time for “Arizona” to attend. Ashley and her mother flew out to Springfield, IL anyway, holding onto hope that someone could loan Ashley a horse for her last opportunity to win a saddle seat National Championship (as this was Ash’s last year as a junior exhibitor). Of course, all the equitation horses were taken, being primed for the several eq classes that would be paying over $20,000 in college scholarship money to their talented winning riders. There were no mounts to be found… except for one. A generous owner and trainer made the loan. Ashley had only a few minutes of practice time, but, guess what? In July she had pulled off a National Championship in Arabian English Pleasure at Youth Nationals, riding a stallion she had only shown once before and had not ridden much more than that. With far less background of lessons and competition than most equitation entries, Ashley represents what equitation is really all about – learning to ride and ride well any horse. Ash, riding this borrowed NSH, Flirting With Fire, emerged National Champion in the USAE Saddle Seat Medal! What a fairy tale ending to this young woman’s junior exhibitor years. And it couldn’t happen to a nicer person.

Another of our newer members, Susan Walker of Forrestville, NY, took home championship roses from the Pleasure Driving Junior Horse class and a Top Ten in the Pleasure Driving Grand Championship won by her fancy black, Classique Memories.

Pat DeLong’s three entries collected a pile of ribbons. Tops was Pat’s homebred Chanelle who won the Country Pleasure Driving Junior Horse, was Reserve Champion in Country Pleasure Junior (saddle) Horse and got Top Tens in the CP Amateur Driving, CP Amateur 35 and Over (saddle) and the Amateur Driving Grand Championship. From the same foal crop at Pat’s farm is Nightro, a gelding who was Top Ten in the Amateur Halter for geldings and in English Pleasure Junior Horse. Stablemate Tanbark’s Chantilly Lace was Top Ten in Three Gaited Open Mares and in both the Three Gaited Amateur and Open Grand Championships.

Yet another National Champion for the East is Gail Shane’s homebred stallion Yippee Ki Yay who won the Fine Harness Open Three Year Olds and was Top Ten in two other Fine Harness classes, Junior Horse and the Open Grand Championship. He also was Top Ten in the Colts and Stallions Grand Championship in hand, placing right behind three mature past national champions! From Gail’s first NSH foal crop is Rachel Crystal’s Clear The Way, piloted by Rachel to a Top Ten in Classic Country Pleasure AOTR.

Judy Motley’s Mighty Aphrodite brought home six Top Tens which included from the in hand classes, Mares Three and Over and Fillies and Mares Grand Championship. Her Top Tens in English Pleasure were in the Amateur 18-34 and the Amateur Grand Championship, Open Mares and the Open Grand Championship.

What a terrific bunch of horses and exhibitors! Congratulations one and all!

More End of Season Winners

Pat DeLong traveled to Wisconsin to ride and show her filly Chanelle at the District Four Championships. Chanelle, a junior horse up against seasoned competitors, was named District Champion in Country Pleasure Novice and CP Amateur Driving and grabbed a Top Five in the CP 18 and Over.

The Firewind Farm horses were our only club horses exhibiting at New York State Fair, such a great place to show off our breed because of the thousands of spectators and visitors to the barn. Mike Frye’s Wayward Night won the English Pleasure and the EP Championship. Kathy Busier’s HF The Mystic won all he entered also, a long list consisting of Country Pleasure, CP Amateur, CP Open Championship, Halter Males and the Halter Grand Championship. Ginny Frye’s French Lick won the Halter Mares and was Reserve Champion to Kathy’s horse in the Halter Grand Championship.

The Octoberfest show at the Big E is a favorite of some of our exhibitors, some just because of the Halloween doings. The entry from Firewind Farm in the Halloween Costume was first in the group division this year, amusing spectators and judges with their “trashy rodeo queen” outfits. NSH exhibitors Kathy Busier and Kylee Huizenga, accompanied by some relatives and a friend represented Firewind. Halter at Octoberfest was won by Pat DeLong’s Nightro who also won the English Pleasure Open but did not show back. The English Championship went to an entry from Syracuse, and Holly Turner’s Gettin’Jiggy With It was Reserve. The Country Pleasure Open went to Alicia Pulafico’s Rulling Passion with Barry and Lori Blochers’ Europa taking the Championship and Kylee Huizenga’s Basic Instinct went reserve. The Blochers’ Americana, making her Hunter Pleasure debut, won both the Open and Championship. All three of Sue Mader's horses, Ravven, Celestial, and Commander's First Edition, were in the ribbons. In special support as a NSH exhibitor, Sue provided a delicious soup at the aisle party.

New England National Show Horses

Bring Home the Ribbons from District Championships

Syracuse International Horse Show, one of the very nicest places to be every summer for National Show Horses, Morgans, Saddlebreds, Friesians and ponies, hosts the District Two NSH Championships.   Parties abound, one of which is a very special treat – a cookout at nearby Hallston Manor where the Annual Debut of (Saddlebred) Babies takes place.  With the show going to just two sessions a day this year, the schedule was relaxing for the duration of the June 26-29 event.

Judging NSHs were Jim Paden, Melissa Moore and Phil Fountain.  The halter classes boasted some very fancy entries with past national champions in more than half of the classes.  The largest in-hand class was Geldings Two and Over which was won by Holly Turner’s Gettin’ Jiggy With It who also returned to the ring for a Top Five placing in Three Gaited.  Holly’s filly, KV Mistress Cholette, was Top Five in the Mares Two and Over and District Champion in the Country Pleasure Driving Junior/Novice. Gail Shane’s two boys, Sexy Thots and Yippee Ki Yay were District Reserve Champions in Colts and Geldings Yearling and Weanling and Stallions Two and Over, respectively.  Candy Dunbar’s Incognito was Top Five in both the Geldings Two and Over and the Gelding Amateur class.  Incognito also placed under saddle in Country Pleasure.  Ginny Frye’s French Lick was District Reserve Champion in both the Mares Two and Over and the Mares Amateur.

Pat DeLong had a great show with two of her mares.  Chantilly Lace was District Champion in Amateur Three Gaited and Reserve District Champion in the Open Three Gaited.  Chanelle, a four year old showing for the first time, won both the Pleasure Driving and the English Pleasure District Championships for the junior/novice horses and was Top Five in both the Amateur and Open English Pleasure District Championships.

Another great entry from New England was Clear The Way, presented by his owner Rachel Crystal to a blue in the 17 and Under Country Pleasure and a Top Five in the Country District Championship. He also carried Rachel to wins in both the UPHA NSH Challenge Cup and the NSH 17 and Under Saddle Seat Equitation.  Sydney Bohren on her Once Upona Time also placed in the Challenge Cup and the gelding went Top Five in the Amateur English Pleasure District Championship.

Carol Quigley’s gelding After Midnight was Classic Country District Champion.  Susan Walker’s Classique Memories was Top Five in both driving and saddle classes.  Kylee Huizenga’s Basic Instinct placed well in his amateur qualifier and was Top Five in the Amateur Country District Championship.  George Dunbar’s Ablaze was Top Five in both the Amateur and Open Hunter Pleasure District Championships.  Kathy Busier’s gelding HF The Mystic placed in his Country Pleasure 18 and Over class.
